About Rahway, New Jersey

About Rahway, New Jersey at Bell Mitsubishi
Rahway, New Jersey, has a long and rich history. The area was once home to the Lenni Lenape Native Americans, but was sold to the English in 1664 as part of the Elizabethtown Tract. From that time, the area has had a steady population growth and today just under 30,000 people call Rahway home.

In the early days of the town, Rahway was home to the first national mint that created a coin with the inscription E pluribus unum (“out of many, one”)—the former motto of the United States.

One of the oldest buildings in the area is the Merchants’ and Drovers’ Tavern, which was built in 1773 and has served as a general store, personal residence, tavern, and inn. In the 1930s, as stagecoach travel diminished, the inn closed but the building was used as the Girl Scout House through the 1960s. Today, the building is being restored to its state of glory in the 1820s and will be used as a museum for the local area.
