The dealership will likely inspect your vehicle before starting negotiations. This includes everything from checking the VIN for information on the vehicle history to looking at the condition of your tires, brakes, and other mechanical parts.

Consider the Offer

After the dealer has judged the quality of your vehicle (sometimes they will even take the car for a ride before deciding to make a note of the driving experience), you will receive an offer from them. The biggest factor that goes into deciding the amount offered is how well other vehicles of a similar class and quality are selling.

Negotiate

At this point, you’re allowed some wiggle room in the process and may be able to negotiate the cost. You’re also under no obligation to trade in your vehicle, if you’re unhappy with the amount you would be receiving. So, consider your options.
